About Us

The Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP), launched on May 21, 1986, was created to ensure that Pittsburgh’s African-American community votes in every election. Through the dedication of agencies, organizations, religious leaders, and committed individuals, B-PEP advocates for voter registration and participation, urging African Americans to embrace the mission: “It’s a LIFETIME COMMITMENT…African Americans VOTE in EACH and EVERY election!” The organization also pushes elected officials to effectively meet the needs and concerns of the African-American community while emphasizing the powerful impact of consistent voter turnout. Supported by local and national foundations such as the Heinz Endowments, the Pittsburgh Foundation, POISE Foundation, Three Rivers Community Foundation, and the Ford Foundation, B-PEP also leads initiatives like the Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against Violence (CAV) and the Corporate Equity and Inclusion Roundtable (CEIR), and participates in the Non-Profit Voter Engagement Network.

CHAIRMAN & CEO

TIM STEVENS

As the Chairman and CEO of the Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP), Mr. Stevens has dedicated decades to advancing the mission that African Americans and other marginalized communities must have their voices heard and their votes counted in each and every election.

Founded in 1986, B-PEP has become a cornerstone of political advocacy and civic engagement in Pittsburgh under Mr. Stevens' leadership. Through voter registration drives, candidate accountability forums, public safety initiatives, and policy advocacy, B-PEP has helped mobilize thousands of voters, elevated Black political leadership, and shaped the civic landscape of the region.

Mr. Stevens’ work has extended beyond the ballot box. He has been instrumental in fostering police-community relations through the Community Empowerment Association and has consistently advocated for public safety with justice, equity in education, economic inclusion, and racial reconciliation. His leadership was central in forming the Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against Violence, which brought together diverse stakeholders to tackle systemic violence and racial disparities.

For nearly four decades, Tim Stevens has stood at the intersection of activism, leadership, and progress, helping to build a more just, engaged, and equitable Pittsburgh. His legacy is not only in the policies he has influenced, but in the lives he’s empowered to participate fully in democracy.
